KEF has been the headline name in active wireless speaker systems for the majority of the last decade. Its current flagships, the LS50 Wireless II, top most “best active speaker” lists because of their superb sound and immense versatility. But at $3,000, they’re quite expensive.
The good news is that KEF offers two smaller, more affordable versions of that flagship active speaker system, the LSX II and LSX II LT, which cost $1,500 and $1,000, respectively.
Both KEF’s smaller active speakers are mostly the same. The speakers in both the LSX II and the LSX II LT are the same size, pack the same drivers and power, and are both highly versatile.
Both systems support streaming over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. And they have numerous wired connections — including HDMI and USB-C — so you can easily use them as TV speakers or connect them to your computer and create a pretty badass desktop hi-fi system.
But naturally, the “LT” versions have been handicapped in a few ways to drop the price.
Most notably, both LT speakers need to be tethered together (via an included USB-C cable) at all times — the regular models can work tethered or wirelessly — which means you don’t have as much flexibility in placing the speakers in your room.
Also, the LT speakers lack an analog aux input, making them more difficult to connect to an older analog source. Basically, you can’t really use the LT models as turntable speakers.
The KEF LSX II LT system is best used as computer speakers or for streaming.
KEF introduced the LSX II LT exactly two years ago — in January 2024 — making it not only the brand’s most affordable active speaker system, but also its newest.
That said, it appears that KEF may be trying to get rid of inventory (and potentially release next-gen models?). As spotted by eagle-eyed Reddit users, third-party retailers have been discounting the KEF for a while now, and some — notably Crutchfield — have removed them entirely from their offerings.
KEF is still selling the LSX II LT on its website at full price — the system costs $1,000 — but Amazon is discounting it by several hundred bucks. You can buy the system for $650 (but only in white).
However, the best going right now is from Costco. The retail juggernaut is selling the LSX II LT in all three color options (grey, white or sage) for $500. Yep, that’s exactly half off.
The deal is currently live and runs through February 8th.
