Perhaps more than any other type of blade, the heirloom knife has a definition that is wide open.
After all, the most fundamental quality of such a knife is simply that it is passed down for generations.
For that reason, it should have durable materials, a classic design and solid construction, but a bit of character really makes a difference.
Enter the Böker Plus Advent Calendar 2026 Gent and EDK, which, once you assemble by hand over the course of 24 days, might be the most heirloom-worthy knives imaginable.
It’s one thing to place an order for a custom knife that then gets assembled by hand, boxed up and sent your way.
It’s quite another to encounter 24 little numbered boxes, each containing a single knife component, and put them together yourself throughout the month of December.
That’s the idea behind Böker’s annual Advent Calendar knife tradition, the 2026 edition of which just got announced by the brand.
Assuming you have the patience to only open one box per day, you’re looking at more than three weeks of fun surprises as your knife slowly comes to life.
While the details are somewhat sparse at this point, these products come with “blades, handle scales, screws and small surprises,” typically enabling a bit of on-the-spot customization.
A detailed step-by-step instruction manual, accompanying a YouTube video and Work Sharp tool kit, ensures even a noob — be that yourself or a lucky early Christmas gift recipient — can assemble the knife.
As usual, Böker is putting out not one Advent Calendar, but two. While both are versions of extant knives, they’ve never appeared in these exact configurations, adding exclusivity to the drop.
The more traditionally heirloom-y of the two, the Gent, is a classic gentleman’s folder featuring a clip-point blade with a nail nick for two-handed opening, held in place with a backlock.
Details on materials are sparse — something that may change as the knives get closer to availability — but based on previous editions of the Gent, I would guess blades will measure 3.23 inches.
The more modern option is the EDK. While the name is short for Everyday Duty Knife, the silhouette is quite similar to another acronymed Böker offering, the DTK (Duty Tactical Knife) I wrote about last month.
This one features a tanto-shaped 3.07-inch blade, plus an open length of 7.44 inches, a weight of 2.61 ounces and a thumb slot for one-handed deployment.
While there is mention of a crossbar lock, the images and additional copy clearly indicate a backlock, meaning to close the knife, you’ll need the same two hands you used to assemble it.
The Böker Plus Advent Calendar 2026 Gent and EDK are available for purchase for $235 each.
Keep in mind that, true to their intended role as holiday gifts, delivery is scheduled by October.
